What is happening
Civil War — RSF vs SAF
Since April 2023, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have fought for control of Sudan. Darfur bears the worst of it. The RSF — formerly the Janjaweed militias of the 2003 Darfur genocide — are again targeting the same communities.
Famine
The UN declared famine in parts of Sudan in 2024 — the first famine declaration anywhere in the world in years. An estimated 25 million people face acute food insecurity. Aid convoys are blocked. Aid workers have been killed.
Sexual Violence as Weapon
UN investigators have documented mass rape as a systematic weapon of war by RSF forces. Same perpetrators. Same targets. Same methods. Twenty years later.
