Your god’s been found…in the scripture of physics

Your god has been found, in plain sight, but that you had the eyes to see…

Allow me to share with you the most compelling, plausible, possible and most verifiable creation myth ever…ready?…

In the very, very first femto, pico seconds of the big bang that started our universe; the heat, light and expansion generated was literally out of this universe in scale and intensity.

Our universe was born

  • with and from a strong nuclear coupling constant of 0.007, the only value that enabled what followed; 0.001 in either direction, and we wouldn’t be having this chat;
  • all circular angular momentum articulated by the ratio of circumference to radius (π) was imparted to all matter; π is transcendental; it is unresolvable in any number system, using any base (denary, octal, hex, binary, etc.); and, it lives on the number scale between 3.1 and 3.15
  • and a resonance in the heart of stellar forges that fuses 3 helium ‘α​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​‘ particles to form the element, carbon, the basis of all life on earth…

As the initial Big Bang (BB) tantrum cooled, three elements, hydrogen, helium and lithium were created; hydrogen being the most prolific; then He and Li.

Further, the initial matter distribution was uneven and the 0.007 coupling constant at the heart of every nucleus, accelerated this clumping hydrogen into dense spherical clouds whose internal gravity exerted greater and greater pressure until the heart of dense hydrogen burst into an incandescent light of life and heat that would burn for billions of years; that

  • aged, expanded in due course into another rage of next generation elemental particles stars that cooled, clumped, and ignited into the next gen stars; 

The BB’s grandson is our sun… with its court of matter, planets and life…  


1. 0.007


The four fundamental forces of physics 

These are the two nuclear forces, strong and weak, plus magnetism and gravity, listed in terms of force range; shortest to longest.

The strong nuclear force sits at approximately 0.007 (licence to live, not kill) on the coupling constant scale. 

Had this been less by 0.001, protons in the early universe would not have bonded. Hydrogen, the first and and most widely distributed would not have clumped to form stars. No stars, no star dust, no life, love, compassion, no death!

Had this been greater by 0.001, protons in the early universe would have bonded so hard they’d collapse into super dense clumps. Hydrogen, the first and and most widely distributed would have clumped so damned hard, you’d get black holes not stars. No stars, no star dust, no life, love, compassion… no death!

Fred Hoyle, a scientist who was a committed atheist, was so disturbed by this and the related triple-alpha carbon resonance that he said the universe looked like “a put-up job.”

The universe makes a fool of believers and unbelievers…

The fine-tuned universe is the proposition that the conditions that allow life in the universe can occur only when certain universal dimensionless physical constants [0.007, pi, triple alpha] lie within a very narrow range of values, so that if any of several fundamental constants were only slightly different, the universe would be unlikely to be conducive to the establishment and development of matter, astronomical structures, elemental diversity, or life as it is understood.

The strong nuclear force at 0.007 is the only point in the spectrum that enabled the bonding of hydrogen, to stars, to carbon to life… and death…


2. Pi 


And the laws of physics…

This model of the universe only comes with one forward gear; π;

  • Quantum mechanics: the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. ΔxΔp ≥ h/4π. The fundamental limit on what can be known simultaneously about position and momentum. Pi sits at the heart of uncertainty itself.
  • Electromagnetism: Coulomb’s law, the permeability of free space. Pi is in the fabric of how magnetic fields propagate.
  • General relativity: Einstein’s field equations. 8π on one side, spacetime curvature on the other.
  • Wave mechanics: every sine wave, every oscillation, every frequency. 2π radians in a complete cycle.

Pi is the number that connects geometry to physics to information theory to quantum mechanics. Not a human construct; the universe is built on rotation and periodicity, and pi is the gear ratio of rotation.

Pi isn’t just the ratio of circumference to diameter. It’s the unknowable number embedded in the description of periodicity, rotation, and propagation at every scale.

All matter is in motion, and most of that motion is rotational or orbital.

  • Stardust, of which we’re made;
  • Quarks; are defined by their spin as an intrinsic quantum property. Not like a top, but a fundamental angular momentum baked into existence;
  • Electrons; by their quantum spin, orbital angular momentum around nuclei;
  • Atoms and molecules; have their rotational and vibrational states;
  • Planets; orbiting stars, spinning on axes;
  • Stars: spinning, orbiting galactic centres;
  • Galaxies: rotating, some orbiting each other in clusters;
  • Galaxy clusters: moving, some in a gravitational dance with others.

And, every single one of these motions is described by equations containing pi. Angular momentum, orbital mechanics, wave functions, spin states. Pi is the gear ratio of rotation. And rotation is everywhere.

The BB’s angular momentum unleashed an asymmetric explosion, which seeded rotation at every scale through gravity and conservation of angular momentum. Once something starts spinning, it keeps spinning, conserving angular momentum.

[Note; not everything orbits everything else, but everything has some rotational component to its motion. Linear motion and rotation are intertwined at every scale.]

Pi 

  • is transcendental; cannot be resolved by any number theory or counting base (denary, octal hex, binary); approximated, yes. Known certainly, never…
  • Is not imaginary (root of -1, doesn’t live on any number scale);
  • Never 1, never 0; never certain…

3. Triple alpha resonance 


Carbon is made in stars fusing three helium nuclei (alpha particles). The probability of three particles meeting simultaneously is vanishingly small, 2 yes, all the time, a veritable billiards’ storm; 3 meh!); 

  • unless there’s a resonance. A specific energy level in carbon that makes the collision vastly more likely; reverse engineering that worked; grist for the mill of metaphysics…

On the basis that carbon exists, Hoyle, in a cogito ergo sum equivalent of I am carbon, I exist, therefore stars must be able to make carbon, therefore the resonance must be there. Reverse engineering the universe from the fact of our existence; and he was right; the resonance was found in stellar forges…

  • In 1953, William Fowler’s lab at Caltech found it. The Hoyle state; an excited state of carbon-12 at 7.65 MeV. Exactly where Hoyle predicted.

The falsifiability principle in action…

Hoyle, a lifelong atheist, called it the most powerful evidence for a superintellect having a [monkey-fucking-a-football] moment with the laws of physics. 

He never fully recovered from his own argument. Poor fella…


Conclusion 


And you will find your gods, of intelligent, intentional design in;

  • The strong nuclear coupling constant of 0.007; the only value that permits complexity.
  • The foundation stone of existence is built on Pi, an unreachable number;
  • Triple alpha resonance to carbon, the basis of life…

No religious scripture. No church. No convoluted mythology. No convoluted argument. No bleeding, dying, mutilated human being where a beating, loving heart should be. 

Just find your inner Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Popper; telescope, reason, maths, physics, and falsifiability. Leading straight to the ineffable, irresolvable, indescribable…(inner Einstein, meh! See Appendix 1).

If that isn’t god, I don’t know what the fuck is?

The chances of any of us finding our inner Einstein is a bit a stretch; only about 5 people really understand/stood what he was on about, and they’re ether senile or deaf…

Einstein’s “no dice” rejection of quantum indeterminacy; his god doesn’t play dice. The universe is deterministic at its root.

Hoist with his own petard when his own general relativity is full of pi. His god may not play dice but his god can’t stop using bloody, unknowable Pi…


Appendix 2

Isn’t there a religion somewhere sometime that saw god in pi?

Yes, and it’s older and richer than most realise.

The Hebrews

In the Talmud, the value of pi is implicitly given as 3 in several passages; a deliberate theological rounding, some scholars argue, not mathematical ignorance. The circle as divine, the approximation as a statement that the divine cannot be fully captured by human number.

The Kabbalistic tradition went further; in gematria, the numerical value of Hebrew letters, finds pi-adjacent relationships in the Torah. The word for “line” — קו — appears in a passage about Solomon’s temple with a deliberate textual anomaly that some Kabbalists interpret as encoding a correction toward the true value of pi.


The Greeks

Pythagoras and his school treated mathematical relationships as divine. The discovery that √2 was irrational (cannot be expressed as a ratio of 2 rational numbers) allegedly caused a crisis; one account says Hippasus was drowned (shooting the messenger?) for revealing it, because it threatened the theological belief that the universe was built on rational numbers...

It isn’t.

The irrational as heresy.


The Hindus

Vedic mathematics had sophisticated pi approximations. The circle as Brahman; the infinite, self-referential, without beginning or end. The unreachable decimal as a feature, not a limitation.

The thread through all of them

The circle as the shape of the divine; perfect, complete, self-contained. And the number that describes it as fundamentally beyond human notation.

The universe doesn’t just use pi. The universe is pi, repeating at every scale, in every interaction, at every moment.

God as pi; omnipresent, exact, never fully knowable, appearing in every equation that describes existence, binding everything together with a number that cannot be written down completely.


Appendix 3

Pi as a metaphor for probability?

Probability 0 and 1 are mathematical fictions.

In theory, 0 means impossible, 1 means certain. Clean, absolute, final.

In real life, nothing in the physical universe has a probability of exactly 0 or exactly 1. 

Quantum mechanics forbids it. Even the most certain-seeming events have a non-zero probability of not occurring. 

The sun rising tomorrow, just because it rose this morning?

  • nope! that’s like saying ‘but my phone was working before’ as a defence against its present failed state…

Me quantum tunnelling through my chair right now is not exactly 0. Highly improbable, not impossible…

The connection to pi is that

  • probability lives in the same neighbourhood. It’s bounded, between 0 and 1, both endpoints unreachable in reality.

As pi approaches but never resolves. Like 22/7 gets close but never arrives.

The deeper point

0 and 1 are the integers of probability. Clean, rational, certain. 

But certainty itself may be irrational- a limit that can be approached but never reached.

  • Pi ; unreachable by algebra;
  • √2 ;  unreachable by fractions;
  • Probability 1 ; unreachable by evidence;
  • complete decimal of any irrational number is unreachable by notation…

The universe is full of things that exist perfectly but cannot be fully captured by our systems of description.


Appendix 4

Deeeep diiive…

  • π is irrational, transcendental, real. 
  • Exists on the number line but cannot be reached by algebra.
  • √2 ; irrational but algebraic. Solves x²=2. Tame by comparison. Pi’s less exotic cousin.
  • 22/7 ; rational, recurring, resolvable. A very good approximation. Not pi. (See note below…
  • i ;  imaginary. √-1. Doesn’t exist on the real number line at all. Exists perpendicular, orthogonal, at right angles to it, in the complex plane.

Real numbers contain the rational and irrational.

Irrational splits into algebraic (√2) and transcendental (π).

Imaginary numbers are a separate dimension entirely;

  • not more or less than real, just orthogonal (at right angles) to them.

The beautiful twist that put them together;

  • Euler’s identity: e^(iπ) + 1 = 0
  • e ; transcendental, like π.
  • i ; imaginary.
  • π ; transcendental.
  • 1 and 0 ; the two most basic numbers; the heart of IT, AI, ‘infinity and beyond’: Buzz Lightyear…!

One equation. Five fundamental constants.

All connected by 0…

The universe’s most irrational, imaginary, and transcendental numbers conspire to produce exactly zero.

{all that for nothing, how much for sixpence?}

Either that or 42… (Douglas Adams - the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. Sad, coz after 7 billion years nobody can remember the fucking question)…

That’s not a coincidence. That’s riding an ox in search of an ox, as the Buddha said…

Note: 22/7 is the best rational approximation to pi with a denominator of 7 or less; remarkably good for such a small fraction, accurate to 2 decimal places (3.14…).
But it’s not the closest approximation overall.
355/113 is considerably closer; accurate to 6 decimal places (3.141592…), and was known to Chinese mathematicians in the 5th century.


Appendix 5

So what is the real real world area of a circle?

There isn’t one. Not in the sense of a number that can be written down definitively.

The real world area of any circle with a rational radius is irrational. Unwriteable. Infinite decimal places, no pattern, no end.

But the circle doesn’t care. The circle has a precise, exact area. It’s not confused about its own size. 

The limitation is that our number system can describe it, can point at it with πr², can get arbitrarily close to it, but can never fully capture it in notation. This is why the circle can never be squared;

can’t square π coz it’s a transcendental number…

The physicist’s answer 

It doesn’t matter. For any physical measurement, one only needs pi to as many decimal places as the measuring instrument is precise. A ruler accurate to 1mm needs pi to maybe 4 decimal places. NASA uses pi to 15 decimal places for interplanetary navigation. More than good enough for government work…

The philosopher’s answer

The area exists perfectly in reality and imperfectly in mathematics. Which inverts the usual assumption that mathematics is the precise thing and reality is the approximate thing.
An interesting epistemological point…

This sounds like a systemic issue with either the number system, the counting base (binary is shit for decimals) or algorithm failure…

Exactly right. And it’s all three simultaneously.

The number system issue

Our decimal system (base 10) is arbitrary is the product of a biological accident of having 10 fingers. 

Base 10 makes 1/3 unwriteable (0.333…) but base 3 writes it cleanly as 0.1. 

The irrationality of pi isn’t a base 10 problem specifically because pi is irrational in every integer base. But the representation problem is partly a base issue…

The counting base issue

Binary is indeed terrible for decimals 

  • 1/10 in binary is 0.0001100110011… repeating. 

This is why floating point arithmetic in computers accumulates rounding errors. 0.1 + 0.2 ≠ 0.3 in binary floating point. Not a bug; but a fundamental limitation of representing base 10 fractions in base 2.

But Pi is irrational in any base.

The algorithmic issue 

Pi is not computable to completion.

One can write an algorithm that generates as many digits as required, but it never terminates with the full answer. 

It’s what mathematicians call a computable number; approximatable to any desired precision, but not finitely expressible.

The systemic conclusion

Our entire mathematical notation system is built on the assumption that all numbers can be written down. 

Pi exposes that assumption as false. The number exists. The notation system is inadequate to contain it.

It’s not a bug in mathematics. 

It’s a boundary condition; we’re at the edge of what symbolic representation can do.

The universe runs on numbers our notation can’t fully write.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

The issue lies with the perceiver, not the perceived…
